Case Study

A successful succession plan made after a failed sale

David had been recruiting candidates for high-level financial firms for over 30 years. His company, XYZ Group was known nationally and had a great reputation. At age 60, David decided it was time to explore the possibility of a sale. He worked with a large Mergers & Acquisitions firm that prepared materials and put the company on the market. Although several potential buyers were identified and few offers were received, the company was not sold.

Challenge

David set out to identify a successor and found two very strong options. Amy, David’s daughter, began working at XYZ Group during the time of the failed sale. She proved to have that special entrepreneurial spark. Laura was David’s right hand for nearly two decades and had previously hinted at her interest in being involved in ownership.

Solution

To properly vet the possibilities, David and Ashland assembled a team of experts to evaluate the possible outcomes of the various plans. Ashland acted as the “orchestra leader,” providing contextual guidance.

David found a path in which Amy and Laura could build a strong partnership and take the reins together. They would take on significant financial and legal obligations while David achieved the financial watershed throughout the buy-out process that he sought. There was also full concurrence on the most efficient plan from a financial, tax, and logistics perspective, making this exit incredibly smooth.

“Working with Paul and Ashland Capital was a real value add. I wanted to sell my company internally to two of my senior leaders. Ashland Capital had the extensive experience I needed to help me navigate through the process”
